I'd like to whiten my teeth, but I'd like to avoid peroxide-based products. Any suggestions?

Crest Whitestrips hurt my teeth and, I've read, like other peroxide-based products, are potentially carcinogenic (peroxide is an oxidizing agent, which like other oxidizing agents, cause free radical damage--and I've read it's been anecdotally linked to mouth cancer). Can anyone recommend a non-toxic, non-painful alternative?

You can "light" brighten them. You have to go to a dentist though I believe.
Reply:Some toothpastes claim to whiten teeth. There's nothing wrong with using whitening toothpastes as long as they also contain fluoride and ingredients that fight plaque and tartar. Log on to http://tipsfromruby-teethcare.blogspot.c... tips to have sparkle on your teeth and keep them in good.
Reply:Brushing teeth daily with a paste of bi-carbonate of soda with water, erases the stains on the surface of the teeth. OR Dried and powdered Bay leaves mixed with dried orange peel are also a great whitener. OR Rubbing the inside of an orange peel on the discolored teeth allows them to take on excellent white luster. http://teeth-whitening-for-all.blogspot....
Reply:The most common option used as homemade teeth whitening agent is baking soda, which has a mild bleaching action. Given that it is used in baking, it also implies safety. Baking soda is sprinkled on the toothbrush, and teeth then cleaned using a gentle, circular motion. Care should still be taken though, especially for people with gum sensitivity. Old wives’ recipes often state that a paste of baking powder, a little salt, and a few drops of white vinegar, works effectively.

Salt, used exactly as baking soda, is also touted as being a good teeth whitener. However, it might just be its osmosis, dehydrating action that makes teeth appear whiter, since dehydrated teeth look whiter.

Lemon juice is often used, but it had high acidic levels, so teeth can weaken in the long run. Other natural, fruit options regard rubbing the inside of an orange peel on the teeth. A strawberry cut in half and the inside rubbed on teeth also works. Mashed strawberry can also be applied with a toothbrush. Apple cider vinegar is also said to be effective. Dried orange rind, and walnut bark, is also good.

Good oral hygiene however is key, and no amount of homemade teeth whitening agents will eradicate bad hygiene. Drinking lots of water, instead of staining liquids such as coffee, tea, and colas, held in keeping the mouth fresh and well hydrated. Tobacco, a powerful staining agent, should be avoided too. Foods that activate salivary content, such as apples, should be eaten more often.
