Do teeth whitening products such as crest white strips damage tooth enamel?

Or are there any negative effect of using these product?

thanks 4 the help

Do teeth whitening products such as crest white strips damage tooth enamel?
it may damage teeth but there are no long term studies on these products because they have just come out. Teeth are NOT supposed to be white. Teeth are naturally off-white/ ivory colored. So just keep your teeth clean and dont use all of the whitening hype products.
Reply:definetely. The only reason it whitens your teeth is because it dissolves the enamel on the outside, revealing whiter enamel underneath it. My grandma told me that her tooth cracked when she got a whitening treatment done because it was just so thin %26amp; weak from previous treatments.

Don't use teeth whitening!

I'm not sure about whitening toothpastes, they're probably okay. I think it actually cleans away the discoloration.
Reply:they shouldn't but I wouldn't recommend using them for a long period of time but it may make your teeth sensivite to hot %26amp; cold I recommend using a whitening toothpaste it takes long but it won't make your teeth sensitive
Reply:I've never used them cause I was told by a dentist that repeat usage of these products can have an irreversible affect on your teeth. Try a toothpaste with baking soda instead.
Reply:Firstly It will not whiten caps, crowns, veneers, fillings or dentures. Whitestrips Renewal should not harm most dental work. If you have dental work or staining from medication, ask your dentist to determine if whitening is appropriate.

Secondly, use a crest containg peroxide whiich is the enamel-safe ingredient dentists use for tooth whitening.
Reply:whitening products are stain removers the

most common side effect being sensitivity

it's actually the binding product that holds the whitener in the gel that creates this

it dehydrates the surface of the teeth causing sensitivity with temperature touch and air most commonly

another caution is to root exposure, after time gums can recede leaving the root covering(dentin) exposed, this is not a hard substance like enamel and can be very reactive.

whitening is most effective and safe when used under the direction of your dentist.

optimal results are achieved faster and safer when using these products on recently cleaned( by your hygienist) teeth

any build up tarter and calculus will prevent product from reaching teeth.

remember tooth colored fillings, crowns veneers etc will not be affected you may want to consider this if they matched your tooth color and when you whiten they will be darker.

I've seen the best results with custom trays from the dentist and a prescription strength solution

good luck and take care of your smile
Reply:No, crest whitestrips don't wear off the enamel at all. The only negative effect is sensitive teeth. Check out this article about Crest whitestrips:

Reply:Chewing on crunchy foods like carrots, apples and celery, is said to cause friction which helps get debris off your teeth that can stain them. There are many old natural remedies and some new natural and/or herbal products, as well as, some chemical products, all claiming to whiten teeth.

The color of teeth comes from genetics originally, and it varies person to person. Teeth will natually discolor over time due to age. The best way to keep teeth as white and you were designed to have, is to avoid foods, liquids, drugs, and products that stain teeth.

Avoid things known to stain teeth, like coffee, tea, red wine, berries, tobacco products, food colorings, etc.... Avoid direct exposure to a lot of raw lemons or citrus products like tomatos, limes, oranges, as the citric acid wears the enamel off the teeth, and when dentin is exposed (like with cavities), it can cause discoloration. If you do eat them, rinse your teeth right away. Avoid carbonated drinks that contain phosphoric acid, like coca cola for the same reason. Sports drinks often contain citric acid, phosphoric acid and organic acid (coffee contains organic acids, also). The latter two are known to break down calcium, along with breaking down enamel. Also, If you eat raw papaya or raw pineapple, rinse your mouth after eating them, as they have enzymes that can cause sores in your mouth and gums, because they break down proteins.

The antibiotic tetracycline is known to cause teeth to stain and so is fluoride and caffeine. Mercury fillings cause teeth to stain where the tooth comes in contact with the filling; This is because of galvanization. So, one should get all amalgams replaced. Gold seems to be ok as long as it is a good quality gold such as high noble, and white composites or porcelain fillings can be used.

Hydrogen peroxide can whiten teeth, but it can penetrate teeth, which are porous, and cause sensitivity. It is used in dental bleaching. It is a special 35% solution, so buying the 2% bottle of it over the counter in hopes to make your teeth white, will not work and could eventually cause sensitivity, irritation, or inflamation of the gums. Myself, I do not recommend teeth whiteners of any kind, for the same reason. If you do decide to use a teeth whitener, either over the counter or from the dentist, if you are not avoiding foods that cause staining, your teeth will stain again, and you will have wasted your money. To whiten your teeth often, will most likely cause sensitivity, enamel breakdown, and can lead to cavities. The long term effects of teeth bleaching on nerves and blood vessels inside the teeth are unknown. Laser bleaching seems to cause more problems with sensitivity than non-laser bleaching. Bleaching does not work on false teeth, crowns, veneers or fillings (even white ones). You may opt to replace those with lighter shades if you don't like the color. Bleaching is not recommended for children whose teeth are still developing or for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

It is important to brush after meals to avoid plaque and tartar build up, which can also cause discoloration. Avoid toothpastes that contain abrasives to fight plaque and tarter, as they can wear away enamel and make the dentin show through (which has a yellowish or brownish tint), which can cause staining, or cavities or cause your teeth to appear brown or yellow. Also, avoid brushing too hard for the same reason. If you do consume products that cause staining, use water to rinse your mouth directly afterward.

There is a technique called internal bleaching. The only way it can be done is to have a root canal, and root canals cause devastating health effects and should be avoided altogether.

The British Dental Association has expressed concern that the smokers' whitening toothpastes Clinomyn and Pearl Drops are too abrasive. Many whitening toothpastes contain titanium dioxide, a suspected carcinogen and can be absorbed by the skin, and, when the effluent containing it is discharged from manufacturers, it acidifies rivers and seas.

Smokers toothpaste, Topol, containing an abrasive form of silica to remove heavy stains from tar and resin deposits can cause damage to cementum and dentin in people with gingival recession, resulting root exposure.

Tooth whitening actually requires modifying the intrinsic tooth color, chemically alterating the chromophores within the tooth. Whitening toothpastes using bicarbonate, alumina and polyphosphates cannot whiten teeth; All they can do is contribute to stain removal. Whitening requires bleaching or enzymatic disruption.

Acid penetration and dissolution has not been an acceptable method of whitening for nearly a century.

Many products claim whitening ability with various peroxides -- hydrogen, calcium or carbamide. For over-the-counter peroxide content is kept low. It has effervescence and maybe some short-lived bleaching because peroxide is rapidly broken down by oral enzymes from bacteria and saliva. Gels stay on longer, but must be used with a tray to work. Only whitening products used by dentists have ADA acceptance. Over-the-counter product manufacturers have never attempted such claims.

A product called NatureWhite contains carbamide peroxide is supposed to whiten your teeth dramatically with just one 45 Minute application. It is said to be the same thing that dentists use and that dentists use a 12% solution while NatureWhite uses a 22% solution. Crest white strips, by comparison, have a 3% solution.

Before whitening your teeth, you should find out if your teeth have thin enamel. This can cause your teeth to have a yellowish or brownish apperance. Whitening will not help in this situation and can make appearance worse and cause sensitivity.

There are herbs that have been used throughout history to whiten teeth. Sage boiled in water to make tea was said to strengthen gums and whiten teeth. During the middle ages, powdered mint leaves were used to whiten teeth. Charcoal was touted as the best powder to use for whitening teeth, removing tartar and preventing decay. Other common ingredients in tooth powders included: cream of tartar, camphor, white castile soap powder, cuttle fish bone, precipitated chalk, powdered borax, powdered gum myrrh, powdered orris root, and talc. The majority of these ingredients cleaned and whitened teeth.

Here are some other natural remedies :

Take a teaspoon of lemon juice and a tsp of salt. Make a paste. Apply this on the yellowish tint.

Use the inner white part of an orange peel to rub teeth for a lovely white shine.

Take half teaspoon of bi-carbonate of soda mixed with a little water to form a paste. Rub this on your teeth.

Dried %26amp; powdered Bay leaves combined with dried orange peel is an excellent whitener.

Strawberries, oddly enough are said to have cleansing and bleaching properties that can help remove of tea and coffee stains, especially from dentures. Crush the strawberries gently and rub the pulp onto your teeth. Rinse with water.

There are some new tooth pastes and products with Bromaine Complex, a combination of the natural enzymes, Bromelaine from pineapple, and Papain from papaya, said to be clinically proven to whiten teeth.

Dentizyme is an herbal remedy; it consists of a unique blend of bio-active plant enzymes, organic botanicals, rainforest botanicals, and essential oils. Dentizyme users report fewer or no gum disease symptoms, they also report that their gums look pinker and healthier along with excellent teeth whitening results and teeth stains are said to disappear entirely with continued use of this herbal extract.

How does Zoom teeth whitening work?

This method consists of a mixture of gel and special light wave treatments. The patient is seated and the dentist uses a retractor to separate the lips from the teeth so that the gel can be applied. A special gel is then applied on all the exterior faces of the teeth. The dentist is careful, at this point, not to let the gel touch the patient’s gums too much, as it may cause irritation or lesions.

How long does it last and what effects can I expect?

The answers to the questions are different from one person to another. In most cases, a Zoom teeth whitening procedure is done twice a year. An average person who drinks coffee frequently and smokes daily will have improved tooth brightness - around 10 shades brighter. After the procedure is completed, the teeth will gradually start to regain their yellowish color over time, depending on how well you take care of them. On average, people who went through in office tooth whitening procedures noticed that their teeth stay white for months, although the initial brightness does not last more than a few weeks.

Crest Whitestrips (the $20 ones) really helped me.
Reply:Commercial tooth whiteners use hydrogen peroxide and are expensive and inconvenient. A cheap and natural tooth whitening home remedy uses few strawberries but certain precautions have to be taken. I found the information at http://www.aches.in/toothwhitening.html
Reply:You can purchase, Rembrandt whitening toothpaste., Brite smile whitening toothpaste.

Home remedies for yellow teeth?? or store bought products?

i had yellow teeth since i was a kid and ima looking for home remedies to help take off the yellow or store brought products that actually work only meetion them if u used them i would go to my dentist but its hard for me to be able to get an appoitment

Home remedies for yellow teeth?? or store bought products?
JDlockhart your answer is utter b011ocks at best.

1. salt water rinses can help to improve the health of inflammed gums - wont be of any benefit in a healthy mouth 2. the formula you describe is likely to be highly abrasive to tooth structure 3. since when does yellow teeth mean unhealthy gums?! 4. "Fluoride doesnt do crap for your teeth" - ever heard of fluorapatite or the effects of fluoride on bacteria? - no, didnt think so.

- to the OP. Most over the counter pastes etc can be abrasive and (mostly) only good for removing surface staining. (that said, Crest strips are supposed to be v good/safe but I've not used them). If the discolouration is "within", then you will need "proper" bleaching agents - see your dentist.
Reply:Save your money and do this; take some baking soda and wet your toothbrush, put some baking soda in a little glass and add a few drops of water and hydrogen peroxide. Brush vigorously. Do this two times per day. You should see a difference in a week or so. Don't continue to do this, it's a bit hard on the enamel as all tooth whitening products are, so use it maybe once a month once you have the yellow gone.
Reply:A slight modification to the last answer I guess, but, what I've always done it use half and half baking soda and salt. It does not harm your teeth however. They are both water soluable and are no worse then the crap they use in toothpaste. The advantage to the salt is it toughens the gums up and makes them healthy. If you have yellow teeth then your gums probably aren't very healthy from whatever it was that made them (your teeth) yellow in the first place. But the peroxide won't hurt your teeth either if you want to add that. It's not the same stuff they use in tooth whitening products. BTW simply use this in place of toothpaste - fluoride doesn't do crap for your teeth, it's actually bad for you along with the aluminum powder they use in toothpaste. Look it up. Good luck!

Is it possible to be addicted to teeth whitening products?

I seem to have this obsession with whitening products... Is it possible that I am addicted to whitening products.

Is there anything I can do to stop this madness. LOL

Is it possible to be addicted to teeth whitening products?
It's possible to be physiologically addicted to just about anything. Jogging, sun tanning and video games are only the tip of the iceberg.

I'd try and get help, while in moderation tooth whitening products do no harm but if used too often you're in danger of eroding the enamel from your teeth.
Reply:Lol girl.. You probably need to take it easy on the whiting .

It can affect your gums and recede them and your teeth can only whiten up to a point and will not get any lighter. Long term whiting will erode your enamel. Something to think about. Best wishes
Reply:Here are many ways that you can whitening your teeth!

For home remedies.

Mix baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to form toothpaste. Brush the teeth regularly with this paste. It will remove all stains in a month.

Use bicarbonate of soda 5 minutes before brushing the teeth with normal toothpaste in the morning. This is a good home remedy for teeth whitening.

Rubbing the bark of walnut tree on the teeth helps in removing all stains from the teeth.

Strawberries are considered natural teeth whiteners. Rubbing the teeth with strawberries daily will remove all the stains.

If you would like a suggestion on tooth whitening gel, here's something for you!

Crest Night Effects Whitening Gel (about $18.00) allows you to remove stains while you sleep. The tooth whitening system has a fresh, wintergreen flavor. After fourteen days of sleeping with this product on your teeth, you will wake up to a vibrant smile. You should see results in two days, although there are reports of tooth whitening results in one night

Where and how much are teeth whitning products?

My teeth are yellow-ish white.

How can I get that pretty white smile?

where can I get stuff to brighten my smile/

Where and how much are teeth whitning products?
I use Crest White strips. Been using it for over 3 years. I'm a former smoker and a coffee addict and it works every time. I use the Classic or Renewal. It may cause sensitivity but goes away after you stop using the system. Some dentists offer the Crest Supreme or another whitening system but can be pricey. Crest cost me under $30. Anotehr way is the Sonicare toothbrush. It got my teeth super white, even my hygenist said I didn't need a whitening and no plaque/tartar. But you have to be super gentle using it or it can damage your gums and teeth. Good luck!
Reply:The dentist is always the best choice for results. however, they arent the cheapest or pain free. lol. just about any grocery store or possibly a GNC or comparable nutrition store may carry it also.
Reply:I used Crest Whitestrips. They cost 29.00 at Wal-Mart. They really made a difference. They have a lower strip and an upper strip. Here's a tip---I talk with my top teeth more so I didn't use all the lower strips--just till my lower teeth got to the shade I wanted. Then I used the lower strips on my top teeth!! It really works!
Reply:you can buy crest white strips if you want, they cost around 30$, but they aren't the most effective.

The whitening products the dentist has is the best, they change the shade of your teeth a lot faster and for longer. See, the stuff they sell in the store has about 3% whitening ingrediants, the stuff the dentist has is between 15-30%. So i recommend going to the dentist, they have gels that you apply. The good stuff at the dentist costs between 300$ and 1000$.

Teeth Whitening products?

I'm 17, female...I live in Brisbane Australia...My teeth are slightly yellow, and I want them to be really white...What products should I use, how much are they, where can I buy them from, and how long would it take generally to see a difference? Thanks!

Teeth Whitening products?
Aside from going tot the dentist, I would recommend Crest Whitestrips Premium Plus. They are strips that contain 10% hydrogen peroxide that you wear on your teeth twice a day, for 30 minutes (1 hour a day).

With the Crest Whitestrips Premium Plus, you get 10 days worth of whitening strips, and you're supposed to be able to see results in 3 days.

Honestly though, I had to buy a second pack before I really began to see the results. But, at least I got results the second time around. So I would give these a try. I have no idea how much they would cost in Australia, but over here in the U.S., they are about $30.

By the way, Crest Whitestrips come in three types that you can purchase over the counter. Crest Whitestrips Classic, which is the original Crest Whitestrips. They contain 6% hydrogen peroxide, and it comes with 14 days worth of whitening strips. The Premium version is 10% hydrogen peroxide and comes with 7 days worth of whitening strips. And the Premium Plus is the same as Premium, only it contains an additional 3 days worth of whitening strips. The Premium and Premium Plus will more than likely cause more tooth sensitivity than the Classic, as they do contain a higher concentration of the whitening agent.

Anyway, if I were you, I would give these a try. If you don't get noticeable results the first time, then don't get discouraged, you may just need to treat your teeth longer, like I did, and give it another shot. If in the event that it doesn't work the second time around, I would then see a dentist about getting a more concentrated bleaching kit.
Reply:I use the mouth wash. It's affordable and I've seen pretty good results. In the states you can buy whitening mouth wash at all drug stores and chains like Target. I'm not familiar with the shopping business in Australia. Sorry.

BOOTS - teeth whitening products?

Which is the best TEETH WHITENING product i can buy from boots?

links from their website, or names of the products please.

i don't care how much the price is, i just need a name 'cause im going there soon ;)

BOOTS - teeth whitening products?
Boots advanced teeth whitening system does not work, you will not get any whitening results from this as their system does not contain any dental bleach.
Reply:since i am very concerned about getting whiter teeth, i have tried all sorts of teeth whitening only to find out that my gums and teeth are affected by bad effects. and just made the situation worse than before, so i threw them all away. a friend of mine suggested to try maximum teeth whitening and it worked for me. not to mention that the results are amazing i have whiter teeth compared decades ago. now i gained back my confidence for many have been notices my white smile.
Reply:Home whitening kits aren't a good idea as people tend to use them too often and the end result is damaged teeth and gums not to mention all the product you end up swallowing
